Church_in a global pandemic

Updated: Mar 30

Who would have ever dreamt of the way God might break in to remind us that the Church is not a structure of brick and mortar. If this were true, all of us would be in trouble.

But today, a normal Sunday in the spring of 2020, many of us found the doors of our local churches closed. Indefinitely.

Yet, the Church that Jesus instituted never was a building, edifice, or a physical location. The Church mentioned in the Bible always referred to the people of God, those following God by responding to the invitation to know Him by trusting His Son, Jesus of Nazareth.

The apostle Paul went to great lengths to expound on the institution of the Church, also referred to as the body of Christ, it's members, the governing body of the church, and it's leader. Paul reminded us that Jesus is the initial founder and the perpetual leader of the Church and that you and I are members of if as we trust Him.

(1 Corinthians 11-12, Ephesians 4)

Today many of us didn't attend a large corporate gathering of fellow believers in Christ Jesus. We most often refer to this as, "going to church". But, we did do what the local church does on any given Sunday, Saturday, or any other day of the week for that matter. We intentionally focused our attention on God, His redemptive work in our midst, and how we might respond to His invitation to trust and believe Him.

My husband Ed, our dog Oliver, and I attended church in our living room today. During the live worship song, my husband actually took my hand to dance with him as we listened and sang. Yes, I danced with the love of my life during Sunday morning worship. This was another first for me, and I loved it!

We joined the corporate gathering of our local church online through live stream. No, it was not the same as physically gathering with my sisters and brothers of the faith in our local church building, Faith-Family Church of Fayette, MO but it was close enough.

It was good for my soul. My faith was encouraged as my Pastor fed us the word of God from the scriptures and encouraged us to respond to the word of God today in the midst of this global Covid-19 pandemic.

I was pleasantly reminded today by the founder of the Church that I am still a member of His Church, and that He has not self quarantined Himself from me or you. Nothing, not even a global pandemic can distance His love from you and me.

Our Lord Jesus is fully awake and attuned to what is happening all around us individually and globally. I do not believe He is nervous or anxious about what is occurring today and what will be the global impact upon our families, communities, countries, and our world to come. But, I do believe He wants you and me to know that He does care and always will care for you and me.

The question I am left with today is, will I trust the founder of the Church to genuinely and intricately care for me and those I love?

Will I ask Him to show me how to care for another in this unpredictable and uncertain time in the midst of my own fear and anxiety?

I believe the head of the body of Christ will continue to care for you and me today and tomorrow, and He most often does this through the local church.

Let him have all your worries and cares, for he is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you.
