Contagion of Perfect Love

In our 7th week of mandated social restrictions of distancing, we can now see light at the end of our global Coronavirus pandemic tunnel, at least in the USA.

Amazingly, in our lifetime we have witnessed one of the most powerful forces of nature in something so tiny it is only seen under a microscope. We have become helpless to the adverse effect of an unseen enemy upon our way of doing just about everything in our lives; from family, work, play, and even worship.

This contagious Coronavirus has proved unstoppable at this point in time. The effect of this force of nature has brought out the worst in many of us. No one has been exempt from the inter collective emotional toll of loss. No one, not wealthy, not government leaders, not the scientific medical specialists, not the corporate giants, not you, and not me.

But, what if we were willing to look at little closer to the Covid-19 pandemic and allow it to illume the spiritual parallels of this natural force? Could there be anything good from all this death, devastation, isolation, loneliness, exhaustion, anxiety, and blame?

I believe there is a good parallel to be found. We have been given the opportunity to reconsider what is essential in every area of our lives. One thing sticks out in every area and space of our existence as being essentially paramount to live and thrive and that is our relational connections. Life-giving relationships are essential to flourish in this world bar none. What is necessary for human development and growth in this unprecedented time of isolation and waiting is love. Is it that simple? Yes, it is profoundly simple.

How might our lives be different or even better when all things change again and soon? What if we had something within our hearts that if breathed would spread with a contagion force as mighty as the coronavirus global pandemic of 2020? But instead of killing, devastating economies, fueling addictions, and exhausting with loneliness it healed us.

This spiritual force is free to all, those living in 3rd world countries and 1st world countries alike. It cannot be manufactured, packaged, and sold online. You guessed it, this spiritual force is love and doesn't originate from you and me, but from God.

Every time you and I demonstrate a simple act of love whether by praying, researching, feeding, holding, leading, cleaning, teaching, giving, or helping we are breathing this divine force upon another and we both experience God. Don't take my word for it. Take the words of one of Jesus' twelve apostles and inner circle of three, John. Many biblical scholars give John the title, apostle of love. He penned his experience of walking with the son of God, the second person of the trinity and gifted humankind the narrative of this divine energy of God and it's significance upon humanity. 1 John 4:7-8

One thing I have learned through all of this whirlwind of chaos and pivoting is that none of us can change our world.

But, you and I can love our world, and love changes everything.

1 John 4: 7-12 | The Message (MSG)

God is Love

7-10 My beloved friends, let us continue to love each other since love comes from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and experiences a relationship with God. The person who refuses to love doesn’t know the first thing about God, because God is love—so you can’t know him if you don’t love. This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God.

11-12 My dear, dear friends, if God loved us like this, we certainly ought to love each other. No one has seen God, ever. But if we love one another, God dwells deeply within us, and his love becomes complete in us—perfect love!
